Longer Days

November 1, 2014

Happy November everybody!

Apologies for not posting for almost a month... I had no idea what to write about! Many things have happened here and I have no clue where to start.

Since spring is here, the day hours have gotten longer than when winter was here. I really liked that because now I am able to go take a walk after dinner. It still feels very strange because most of the people I know are experiencing fall and wearing sweaters while I'm wearing tank tops and shorts.          All the trees are beginning to bloom with flowers and green leaves and although it's hot, there is a cool breeze that makes it feel good outside.

Every week, Mondays and Wednesdays, my mom goes to an academy to teach Korean. I used to stay home with my dad and just to school work, watch movies, play guitar, etc. but my parents pushed me into going. I'm definitely glad they did!! Not only do I get to be the assistant teacher (which gives me power to watch people do their work), but I get to see people go through the process of learning a language.
I really admire my mom because in Costa Rica, when we had to learn Spanish, she barely knew any English. This created a problem because the language school my parents went to only taught in English. With this, my mom had to learn Spanish AND English at the same time and so this was a big struggle for her. Even though it was hard on her, my mom did her very best to learn as much as she could with the languages. And now, she is able to read, write, and speak in Spanish and English. Although we are all in the process of progressing in learning the languages, my mom is the most hardworking. I'm definitely proud of her!!
With this experience, my mom really knows how to teach a language since she's been through the struggles of learning a language of another country. I would watch her teach at the academy and be filled with pride to call her my mom.
The students range from 13-25 years old. There are only 5-8 students, and even though the classroom is tiny (not to mention steaming hot), everybody does their best in trying to learn Korean. I really enjoy helping the students learn my home language and I get to meet more and more people as I attend the academy with my mom.

I also decided to start tutoring some people (only 2), starting next week, with English pronunciation and so I am definitely excited and nervous for that! Please pray that the first class will go well! It's amazing to see people coming together just by learning languages. What I have learned is that, languages can either create barriers to block people out, or they can create bridges to bring people together. I pray that people would use their language abilities to reach out to one another so our world can become for unified.

Uruguay went through a presidential election with three candidates last week, but they will be going through another one in several weeks with two candidates. I was not happy with the people filling the streets with cars and horns and flags and banners and their... inexperienced singing haha. It was interesting to see. At least for the first 30 minutes it was. It took about 3 hours for them to be cleared out. They were literally in front of my window and the street in front of our apartment was crammed with cars and trucks and buses!! Anyways. Please pray that the right person will be elected to run this country.

Although I still haven't made many friends or found a best friend, I can see that God will bring a new "normal" to me and my family. It has happened before, and I know it will happen again.

Thank you for reading!
Thank you for your prayers.
Thank you for your support.
Thank you for being here.

P.S. It's starting to look like Christmas here :)
