7 Reasons Why I Chopped off a FOOT of my Hair

August 16, 2015

Hello fellow people! As most of you know, I got a haircut! Other than getting a few tiny trims, the last time I had a full-on haircut was...probably around the beginning of 2012. Yup, more than three years ago. Come with me and we will take a journey down memory lane.

Lovely. It was hard finding a NORMAL picture of me smiling at the camera in 2012. My hair was down to my shoulders and it had a lot of layers. I grew it out a month or so after I got the haircut (which actually looked horrendous [the person butchered my hair {I almost cried because it didn't even go up into a pony-tail}]).

Moving on to June of 2013 (picture on left). It grew below the line of where my pits are (yes, I said pits). After several months of having dyed my tips, it grew past the bottom of my bra line. This was February of 2015 (picture on right).

And now, a couple of weeks ago! when I put my hair behind me, it went all the way down to my waistline. The longest I've ever had it!

I had to chop off more than a foot of my hair first before the stylist made it all nice looking.
Enough going down memory lane! Let's get on with the 7 reasons why I chopped it all off!! Enjoy.

1. It felt heavy.
Before: It felt as if some kind of hairy monster was sitting on top of my head. Whenever I would get up from bed or climb out of the swimming pool or shower, my head felt heavy. After a certain period of time, I felt accustomed to it, but I knew it was unnecessary weight.

After: After getting my haircut, I felt so free and light that I wanted to prance around every single meadow in the world. My head felt lighter and so did my shoulders. No more neck pain!

2. It got caught in everything.
Before: I mean everything. The doors, the chairs, the windows, you name it. It hurt a lot too. After comfortably leaning back in a chair, I would decide to get up. When I do, turns out that some strands of my hair had gotten caught in some metal screw or a cracked piece of wood.
When I stand up, it hurts. A LOT. A few strands decide to leave my head and stay with the chair. Whoopee.
After lying down in bed, I elbow my way to get up, but I accidentally push up on my own hair causing myself to get stuck. My elbow leans on my hair when I try to heave myself up. It’s like a never-ending nightmare.

After: No need to worry about getting it caught in anything. Except cracked walls. Too short for the evil metal screws and cracked pieces of wood! Ha!
It was easy for me to get up from bed and I didn’t have to worry about my hair getting in my way of being late for school.

3. I was shedding for three people.
Before: Yes, it’s kinda gross but I shed. A lot. Whenever I brush my hair or sift my fingers through it, hair falls out. After vacuuming, most of the stuff that gets sucked up is, of course, my hair.

After: I still shed. But not for three people.

4. TOO MUCH SHAMPOO.
Before: Many professionals say (please don't trust me on this) you only need a quarter-size amount of shampoo, because you only need to soap up your scalp. For me, it takes a lot of it to get myself all bubbly. Like, A LOT. My parents always complain about how I use too much of it and that there isn’t enough for them.
When I'm in the shower, I'm singing Pump it by Black Eyed Peas.
I love Emma Stone <3
After: A dime size works like a charm. I don’t need to pump out the shampoo, I can just squeeze a healthy amount of it and not worry about my parents scolding me for wasting soap. Success!

5. Drying.
Before: One of the reasons I hated getting my hair wet was because it took FOREVER to dry. It took at least two hours to get damp and it took a good four or five hours to become completely dry.
Sleeping with it wet was not an option, because I would either catch a cold or wake up the next day with a drenched pillow. I didn’t like using a hair dryer since it damaged my hair easily, but there were many occasions where I just used it without a second thought.

After: Oh, sweet baby Jesus. Thank Him for giving me the courage to cut my hair. After a shower or a dip in the pool, all I needed was to shake it out with a few headbangs in order for it to become, not soaked, but just damp. I didn’t even need a hair dryer!
It took, at the least, thirty minutes to dry completely or maybe even an hour. How lovely is that?

6. Babies.
Before: I love babies. Babies are my favorite. They're cute and everything, but when it gets to long and shiny things, their instincts are to pull it. I have had many babies and toddlers pull my hair in a million directions and even be able to put it in their mouth. Gross, I know.
They loved to play with it, brush it, and put scrunchies or clips in it. I was their Rapunzel. In a way, I loved it. But sometimes, things got too painful. Sorry kids, my hair doesn’t glow when I sing (bummer).

After: Even though the babies and toddlers can yank on it when I hold them, it still doesn’t get tangled up as easily as it used to. When a kid asks to play with my hair, I actually have to sit down on the floor for them to decorate it with clips and hair ties.
In other words, they need my permission to play with it.

7. Styling.
Before: Although this can be a plus in some occasions, it was a negative in most occasions. If you just let it loose all day every day, it can look messy. I had a lot of hair on my head and so it looked extremely heavy to others too.
Putting it up in a nice looking pony tail wasn’t an option for me. I had to use a brush or a comb to push it all back and my arms got tired half-way through the process. It was hard for me to get the tangles out from one end to the other so I just left it free and wild.
Making it real nice, such as curling, took...forty minutes.

After: It was hard getting it into a ponytail at first, but after I got the hang of it, it looked and felt nice! Clipping it back on one side was easy-peasy and even though there aren’t a lot of options for styling, it still looked great after a nap.
Having it up in a ponytail all day didn’t affect it. Even if there was a bump in my hair, it wasn’t conspicuous and it looked natural. Unlike having a mountain in my long hair when I had it in an updo all day.

So there you are, my seven reasons of why I cut off my hair. I definitely do not regret cutting my hair. I'm thinking about sticking with short hair for a while now :) I hope this was interesting or of use to you in some way.
