It's been rainy, but that didn't ruin day!
I finally got to have a time to make friends. Success!! I got to meet up with a few girls from the Korean church today. I definitely had a good time.
We met up at the front of the mall and walked together to a coffee shop a few blocks away. It was like a coffee shop in Europe! The wallpaper was all vintage and there were flowers on each little table. It was definitely awkward at first, but what kind of friendship doesn't start out like that? It was pretty funny. We were all just looking around saying, "How pretty..." or "What nice decorations..." But finally, we ordered our drinks and snacks and we made small talk (I ordered Earl Grey tea and waffles if you're wondering). After our drinks and snacks came out, being Korean, we decided to take pictures of our food. We took pictures together and we started warming up to each other. As we ate, we shared stories along with our food. We started warming up to each other and I was really enjoying it. Then, it started pouring outside. I thought about how we were supposed to go to the mall to see a movie, but how were we supposed to get through the rain?
We talked about life and our stories for a while, and then decided it was time to see the movie. Turned out, out of the four of us, we only had one umbrella. Thankfully, I had my windbreaker jacket (the one where it stays mostly dry in water) and wore that on top of my purse. Two people used the umbrella and I ran with a friend to the mall. We got there and we were soaked. No matter how hard we tried to stay dry, our shoes were filled with water and you could hear the sloshing sounds it made. We went to the bathroom to dry ourselves and headed to the move theater.
We were planning on watching If I Stay and I gotta admit, I was pretty excited. We looked at the schedule to see if the movie was still playing at 5:30pm, but turns out, they took the movie out. We didn't know what to do! We tried to look for another movie to watch but they were in Spanish. We wanted to watch the movie in English. Well, I did since I was the noob with the bad Spanish. Everybody else was more comfortable speaking Spanish than English. Anyways, we found out that at 5:45pm Lucy was going to play. I really wanted to watch it, but it was rated R. One of my friends was pretty nervous about watching it since she didn't like violent movies, but we insisted. I told them that my parents wanted to watch Lucy before I did so they would know whether it was okay for me to watch, but it was the only good movie playing at that moment. So I called my parents.
They said no. *tear tear. I was really sad, but I understood why. Reason was, a Korean actor was in the movie and supposedly, the movies he's in, are really violent and gruesome. So I told my friends that we couldn't watch it. After trying to decide what to watch, my parents called again. Could it be..?They said I could watch it! I was super excited and we got our tickets. Turns out, you have to be 12 and older to watch the movie here. Wow.
We went in the theater and we sat down. There was nobody next to me so I stretched out my legs (hehe even though my feet were still wet). Everybody was pretty nervous, but for some reason I was very calm. I was really excited about seeing the movie since the trailer was pretty good. After the movie finished, we got out of the theater. Honestly, I was slightly disappointed. I guess I had my hopes up way too much that I spoiled the movie for myself, but other than that, it was still good. We got out, went to the food court, and we talked. Then we finally decided, at 8:30pm, that we were all hungry, and so we went out to eat dinner.
Everything was going well, until, one of my friends found a fly in her pasta. She said she thought it was an ingredient in her sauce, but nope. A fly. She made jokes about how maybe the fly was boiled along with the pasta we were all eating. 'Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope.' I thought. Other than that, we had an amazing time.
I also found out that if there isn't an adult with you, people call us, Koreans, Chinese. Just like in Costa Rica. This one dude decided to call us "mami" (means babe). Mae, quiere miche?? I think I kind of scared him by glaring at him though. That evil, I'm-going-to-eat-your-hair kind of glare. I'm also surprised at how the fatigue from being around people didn't hit me until I got home. #IntrovertProbs. Things are starting to look up!
It was a very fun day and I thank God for helping me adapt to this new country so well. I'm starting to get settled in. Thank you, again, for those who have been praying for me and my family.
